The University has also distinguished itself by the enviable position it occupies in the comity of Universities in Nigeria and the world over, as evidenced by the Alper/Doger Scientific Index Rankings for 2023, the Webometric 2023 Global Rankings of Universities and the Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan African Universities Rankings.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Andy Egwunyenga reeled out these facts at the 2023/2024 Matriculation ceremony of the University held over the weekend, where over 9,000 undergraduates spread over twelve faculties were admitted out of the close to 26,000 candidates who applied for admission, representing about 34 percent.

The Professor of Parasitology and Public Health explained that the feat was achieved by the “unwavering determination of the current management to advance and reposition the Delta State University, Abraka for national and global recognition”. According to the Professor who is giving the University an enlightened and committed leadership, “most recently, approval was sought and obtained from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to raise the University’s admission quota for the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) programme from 75 to 120. In a similar manner, Nursing Science admission quota was raised from 70 to 120.

“The University obtained approval from the National Universities Commission (NIC) for the commencement of some new Degree-Awarding Programmes among others: Medical Laboratory Science, Doctor of Pharmacy, Agricultural Business and Biotechnology. The University also secured approval from NUC to remount the Faculty of Dentistry in line with the yearnings of aspirations of young Deltans and students from neighbouring states”.

Professor Egwunyenga who is in his last lap of a five-year tenure, drew attention to the University’s e-learning management system, adding that the institution had made available effective Wi-Fi services known as DELSU CONNECT for all staff and students to access within the radius of the University. He told the matriculating students that the ceremony was a requirement in higher institutions and the oath an initiation into the intellectual community, conferring on them the full rights of studentship.

He, however, warned them against acts classified generally as breach of matriculation oath “to include activities which are inimical to the growth of intellectualism, indiscipline, and lawlessness, particularly when such actions involve violence, cultism, yahoo plus, and breach of peace of the University, examination malpractice, indecent dressing, etc”.

Professor Egwunyenga whose uncompromising stance on justice and due process resonates throughout the University, expressed profound gratitude to the Executive Governor and Visitor to the Delta State University, Rt. Hon. Sheriff F.O Oborevwori, whose election was validated by the Supreme Court last Friday, and the Government of Delta State for the giant strides taken in the overall development of the University. He promised that the University would remain focused in its pursuit of academic excellence and the prudent management of the meagre resources of the University for its overall development. While congratulating the fresh students on their admission, he urged them to be mindful of the fact that they were major stakeholders in the Delta State University project and therefore advised them to maintain its sanctity and image while remaining focused in their academic work in order to achieve a fruitful academic careers.

Administering the matriculation oath to the students, the Registrar, represented by the Deputy Registrar, (Establishment), Mr. Emmanuel Okoro re-emphasized all the dos and don’t earlier pointed out by the Vice-Chancellor. He urged them to obey the Vice-Chancellor and other staff and all existing regulations and any other ones that might be made from time to time and to protect the good name of the University and to “refrain from any action likely to bring its name into disrepute”.

The matriculating students were, expectedly, in high spirits in obvious self-congratulations on being among the “few” who were chosen in the yearly race for admissions into institutions of higher learning in Nigeria.
