Federal Polytechnic Ohodo Rector, Dr. Ediri Emmanuel Agada, has urged newly admitted students to remain focused on academic excellence and moral discipline as they begin their academic journey. Speaking during the institution’s 3rd matriculation ceremony in Enugu State, he warned against cultism, examination malpractice, and drug abuse while encouraging students to build good character and supportive friendships. The rector also announced newly accredited NBTE-approved programmes and reaffirmed the polytechnic’s commitment to practical learning, innovation, and producing skilled graduates for national development.

The Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ohodo, Enugu State, Dr. Ediri Emmanuel Agada, has charged newly admitted students of the institution to pursue academic excellence while upholding moral discipline throughout their stay in the polytechnic. Agada gave the advice on Friday during the institution’s 3rd Matriculation Ceremony held at the school’s main field in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Addressing the matriculating students, the rector described the occasion as a major milestone in the institution’s growth within Nigeria’s technical, vocational, entrepreneurial, and professional education sector.

According to him, the matriculation ceremony marks the beginning of a disciplined, rewarding, and successful academic journey for the students.

“Today marks the official beginning of your academic journey. It is a day of celebration, responsibility, discipline, and renewed commitment to excellence,” Agada said.

He encouraged the students to remain focused on their goals, build positive relationships, and maintain good character, stressing that success goes beyond academic certificates

“You are the pioneers of your own future. What you do here will determine the graduates you become. Aim for excellence, build supportive friendships, avoid bad company, respect your parents and guardians, and remember that your character is as important as your certificate,” he added.

The rector reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure, expanding academic programmes, improving staff capacity, and creating a peaceful environment for teaching, learning, research, and innovation.

He noted that the polytechnic would continue collaborating with government agencies, regulatory bodies, development partners, host communities, and other stakeholders to fulfil its mandate of producing skilled and self-reliant graduates.

Agada further highlighted the institution’s philosophy of practical learning, skill development, and character formation aimed at preparing students for today’s knowledge-driven economy.

He also announced the accreditation of new National Diploma programmes in Business Administration and Management, Accountancy, Statistics, and Higher National Diploma programmes in Computer Engineering Technology and Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology (Power Option), approved by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

According to him, the newly approved programmes are designed to meet industry demands, technological advancements, and the growing need for competent middle-level professionals in Nigeria.

The rector expressed satisfaction with the institution’s rising student population, describing it as a sign of increasing public confidence in the polytechnic’s programmes and management.

While urging students to remain law-abiding, Agada warned against cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, violence, truancy, and other forms of anti-social behaviour capable of destroying their future.

“Avoid truancy, cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, violence, indecent conduct, and all forms of anti-social behaviour, which threaten your future and the institution’s peace,” he warned.

He also appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Education, the Minister of State for Education, and other stakeholders for their support towards technical and vocational education in the country.

The event featured the administration of the matriculation oath, with over 200 newly admitted students pledging to abide by the institution’s rules and regulations.

Parents and guardians who attended the ceremony commended the management of the polytechnic for its rapid development and steady progress.

Dignitaries at the event included the Registrar of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), the Director of Academic Planning representing the Vice Chancellor of UNN, members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, clergy members, and traditional rulers.
