Dutch Deputy Ambassador Visits ABU, Seeks Collaboration with Vice-Chancellor
The Dutch Deputy Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Jurgen Bartelink, visited Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, to explore potential collaborations between Dutch institutions and the university.

The Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands Embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Jurgen Bartelink, has paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, to strengthen ties and explore possible collaborations.
During the visit, Mr. Bartelink emphasized that the Netherlands has maintained a long-standing presence in northern Nigeria and expressed keen interest in understanding how Dutch firms operate within the region. He highlighted the financial challenges currently faced by universities in the Netherlands due to government budget cuts, noting that efforts are being made to secure alternative funding from the European Union and private organizations.
The Deputy Ambassador encouraged ABU to actively engage its alumni network, fostering a sense of connection and responsibility that could lead to financial and developmental contributions. He further noted that identifying strategic opportunities could facilitate access to funding from global organizations such as the World Bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Mr. Bartelink commended the University Management for its commitment to academic excellence and research.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Advancement, Research, and Innovation, Prof. Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi, welcomed the Deputy Ambassador and expressed appreciation for the Netherlands' interest in ABU’s programs. He reiterated the university’s commitment to exploring collaboration with Dutch institutions, especially in securing external funding for academic and research initiatives.
Prof. Bala highlighted ABU’s ongoing efforts in commercializing its research outputs through patenting, describing it as a strategic step toward sustainability. He underscored the potential for collaboration in key areas such as agriculture, animal husbandry, health, life sciences, and biotechnology, which align with the university’s focus on research and development.
The Vice-Chancellor thanked Mr. Bartelink for selecting ABU as a focal point for the Netherlands' programs, expressing optimism that the partnership would yield mutual benefits for both institutions.
