EKSU Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Ojelabi Harps On 'Brains Before Bridges,' Calls For Massive Physics Funding
Professor Fadeke Matthew Ojelabi, a leading expert in Condensed Matter Physics at Ekiti State University (EKSU), delivered the university's 96th inaugural lecture on Tuesday, calling for a significant boost in funding for physics research and education in Nigeria.
In her lecture titled: “QUANTUM LEAPS AND ECONOMIC SPIKES: How Condensed Matter Physics (CMP) Can Drive Nigeria’s Technological Revolution,” Prof. Ojelabi highlighted critical issues such as the lack of well-equipped laboratories, outdated equipment in secondary schools, and limited access to modern educational software.
She argued that strategic investment in theoretical condensed matter physics (TCMP) is not merely an academic pursuit but a critical imperative for national development, capable of addressing pressing challenges in energy, security, advanced manufacturing, and digital defense.
"By prioritizing brains before bridges and establishing robust funding mechanisms, the government can unlock unprecedented economic and developmental advantages, securing a prosperous and independent future," Ojelabi stated.
She recommended a redesign of undergraduate science curriculums to include detailed historical accounts of scientific discoveries, helping young scientists identify where they can make meaningful contributions.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Ayodele Babatola, charged other academics to come forward and deliver their inaugural lectures, promising the university's continued support for academic pursuits.
