Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called off their 20-day strike following an agreement reached between the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the FCT Administration to settle the remaining 60 per cent of the 25 months' arrears owed to the teachers.

Abdullahi Kafas, the Chairman of the FCT chapter of the NUT, confirmed the suspension on Monday, noting that FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had directed the Director of Treasury to commence immediate payment. The strike, which began on September 18, was prompted by the failure of the Area Councils to meet the demands of the teachers at the end of a 14-day ultimatum. Wike had earlier warned that he would use 10 per cent of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) allocated to the councils to address the outstanding arrears if the issue was not resolved.

Kafas assured that while the immediate payment of the 60 per cent had been secured, the remaining balance would be paid gradually.
