The Federal University Lokoja has intensified efforts toward digital transformation and international academic collaboration following a working visit by former Secretary General of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, Yakubu Aboki Ochefu.

During the visit on April 24, 2026, Yakubu Aboki Ochefu, who is also the Chairman of HATCL Consulting, held discussions with the Vice Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Gbenga Ibileye, on proposed academic collaborations, data protection training, and transnational education opportunities.

A major highlight of the engagement was the proposal for a Postgraduate Diploma in Data Protection and Privacy to be delivered through the university’s distance learning platform in partnership with relevant professional bodies.

According to Ochefu, the programme is intended to address the increasing demand for qualified data protection professionals following recent developments in Nigeria’s data governance and privacy regulatory framework.

He explained that the course is designed to run fully online, with learning materials already developed and currently undergoing validation.

Ochefu also emphasized the need for institutions to strengthen data governance structures through the appointment and empowerment of Data Protection Officers responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, conducting data audits, and managing institutional information systems effectively.

Beyond the proposed diploma programme, he disclosed that discussions are ongoing to expand international academic partnerships involving the university.

He revealed that the University of Lincoln has expressed interest in establishing engagement with Federal University Lokoja, with plans underway for a delegation visit to explore possible areas of collaboration.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Gbenga Ibileye, described Ochefu as a longstanding supporter of the institution whose contributions have continued to promote the university’s development and academic expansion.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to digital innovation, global partnerships, and institutional growth, noting that strategic collaborations remain essential to positioning the university competitively within the evolving higher education landscape.

Ibileye also confirmed that the university has already taken steps toward strengthening its internal data governance structure through the appointment of relevant personnel and the adoption of digital administrative systems aimed at improving operational efficiency and compliance.
