Federal University Otuoke Engages Motorcycle Operators on Safe and Orderly Campus Access

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Otuoke (FUO), Professor Promise Mebine, has called on members of the Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria, Otuoke Branch, to sanitize their operations around the university gate in line with safety and traffic management standards.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Otuoke (FUO), Professor Promise Mebine, has called on members of the Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria, Otuoke Branch, to sanitize their operations around the university gate in line with safety and traffic management standards.

The Vice-Chancellor, a Professor of Pure and Applied Mathematics, made the appeal through the Senior Assistant Vice-Chancellor (SAVC), Mr. Francis Elawaremi, during a meeting held at his office in the Vice-Chancellor’s Building on the West Campus.

He urged the operators to avoid reckless riding and indiscriminate parking at the university entrance, stressing that such practices pose safety risks to students, staff, and other road users. He emphasized the need for discipline and orderly conduct to maintain a secure and functional campus environment.

Responding on behalf of the union, the Chairman of the Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria, Otuoke Branch, Mr. Omieworo Victor, stated that the group had resolved internal issues that previously led to the suspension of Okada operations in the area.

He noted that rising transportation costs remain a major concern affecting both operators and commuters, adding that the union would convene a meeting to deliberate on fair and regulated transport fares within Otuoke to reduce tensions and improve service delivery.

Mr. Victor further disclosed plans by the union to introduce structured communication channels, including notice boards at strategic locations and social media platforms, to provide clear fare guidelines for different routes and reduce disputes between riders and passengers.

Also speaking, the Secretary of the Union, Mr. Green Godgift, assured the university management that measures would be enforced to eliminate disorderly parking at the campus gate. He added that motorcycle operators would be required to wear identity cards and transparent vests to distinguish them from students and unauthorized riders.

He expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for the engagement, describing the dialogue as constructive, and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to working with the university management to ensure safe operations and stable transport arrangements within Otuoke.

The meeting ended on a cooperative note, with both parties agreeing on the importance of order, safety, and sustainable transport management around the university environment.
