FG approves Federal Colleges of Education to award Bachelors Degrees

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially authorized all Federal Colleges of Education (FCOEs) to award both Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor's Degrees in Education, following the enactment of the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023.

This development is aimed at enhancing the quality and versatility of teacher education in the country.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the Dual Mandate Policy as a revolutionary reform that broadens access to higher education and equips educators with higher competencies to meet the evolving demands of the education sector. The policy allows FCOEs that meet the National Universities Commission standards to operate under the Dual Mandate, thereby expanding access to higher education and eliminating the need for university affiliations in degree issuance.

This initiative is expected to address declining enrollment, preserve institutional relevance, and improve the overall quality of classroom instruction across Nigeria. By empowering FCOEs to award degrees, the Federal Government aims to produce more qualified educators who can drive national development.
