FG Urges ASUU to Suspend Strike
The Federal Government has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its planned nationwide strike. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, assured that the government is committed to resolving outstanding issues and improving the working conditions of university staff through ongoing negotiations.
The government has reconstituted and inaugurated the Mahmud Yayale Ahmed Federal Government Tertiary Institutions Expanded Negotiation Committee to fast-track talks with both academic and non-academic unions. This move aims to address issues such as funding, salaries, and infrastructure, which are crucial to reviving Nigeria's university system.
ASUU has expressed frustration over the government's slow response to their demands, lamenting that previous agreements remain unfulfilled. The union has begun mobilizing its members for a potential nationwide warning strike as its 14-day ultimatum to the government draws to a close.
The Minister of Education emphasized that the government is working to ensure a stable and efficient academic calendar. He urged ASUU to give the ongoing negotiations time to yield results, assuring that the government is committed to finding lasting solutions.
