FUTA Professor Christopher Akinbile Secures Federal Patent for Groundbreaking Soil Measuring Device

Professor Christopher Akinbile, a leading academic at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), has been granted a patent by the Federal Government of Nigeria for his innovative soil measuring device, MOISTEMP. The device, which measures soil moisture and temperature concurrently at various depths, received formal recognition from the Ministry of Trade and Investment.
Chief Registrar Stella Ozo Ezenduka signed the Certificate of Patent on March 22, 2024, affirming Akinbile's exclusive rights to the invention. The device aims to enhance irrigation scheduling and water management, contributing to food security and the UN's goal of ending hunger by 2030.

Akinbile emphasized the importance of accurate soil temperature and moisture data for crop production, noting that MOISTEMP can log readings on Google Sheets and record measurement locations via GPS. The Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji, hailed the patent as a significant achievement, reflecting the institution's commitment to research and societal impact.
The patent indicates the Federal Government's support for inventions that benefit the public under the Patents and Designs Act.
