FUTMinna, NCC Commission Virtual Library, Solar-Powered Digital Learning Centre at GDSS Garatu
The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna), in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has commissioned a Virtual Library and solar-powered digital learning facility at Government Day Secondary School (GDSS), Garatu, Niger State, to expand access to digital education.
The commissioning, held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, was attended by officials of FUT Minna, the NCC, Niger State Secondary Education Board, community leaders, teachers and students.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, appreciated the NCC and stakeholders for supporting the initiative, describing education as a powerful tool for empowerment, community development and national progress.
He said the virtual library would give students greater access to quality educational resources and digital learning opportunities, reaffirming the University’s commitment to educational advancement in the state.
Prof. Kuta also announced that the University would assess a dilapidated building within the school with a view to supporting its completion.
Project Lead, Prof. Abraham U. Usman, described the facility as a major boost to digital learning. He said it is equipped with internet connectivity, digital educational resources and offline learning materials powered by advanced Wi-Fi and local content services.
He commended the NCC for funding the project and urged the Niger State Government to replicate similar facilities in other schools.
Engr. Dr. Taliha Folorunso of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering conducted a practical demonstration of the solar energy system, explaining how it would provide reliable electricity for computers, internet services and other digital learning facilities.
Engr. Prof. Caroline O. Alenoghena also disclosed that GDSS Garatu has been selected as a beneficiary of another renewable energy education project, through which students will receive practical training in the installation, maintenance and application of solar energy systems.
Representing the Niger State Senior Secondary Education Board and Commissioner of Basic Education, Director of Administration, Malam Hassan Liman Memefu, described the virtual library as a valuable investment that would improve teaching, learning and students’ academic performance.
Community Leader, Alhaji Yarima Isiyaku, thanked the NCC and FUT Minna for the intervention and encouraged students to maximise the opportunities provided.
School Principal, Mr. Paul Gana, expressed appreciation to all stakeholders, describing the virtual library and solar-powered infrastructure as lasting investments that would strengthen digital learning and equip students with relevant technological skills.
