Gombe State University Launches Landmark Sexual Harassment Policy

In a decisive step toward eliminating gender-based violence, the Centre for Gender Studies at Gombe State University (GSU) formally launched its Sexual Harassment Policy Book last week. The initiative solidifies the institution’s commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and protected academic environment.

The milestone event drew high-level support from the judiciary, traditional institutions, security agencies, and human rights advocates, all rallying behind the university’s proactive stance.

The Chairman of the Occasion and former Attorney General of Gombe State, Barr. Zubair Muhammad Umar, lauded Vice-Chancellor Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta for establishing the Centre. Highlighting the urgency of the policy, Barr. Umar noted that GSU’s non-discriminatory approach sets a vital precedent in the region, calling for sustained institutional frameworks to protect the vulnerable.

Echoing this sentiment, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Danladi Umar Muhammed, representing the Vice-Chancellor, reaffirmed that the university maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy. "GSU will not allow any breach of conduct regarding gender-based violence," he stated, pledging full administrative support for the Centre’s operations.

The Senior District Head of Gombe, Alhaji Ibrahim Bappah, serving as Royal Father of the Day, reminded stakeholders that gender advocacy must be inclusive, ensuring that the potential of every child—regardless of gender—is protected and nurtured.

Closing the event, the Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, Dr. Aisha Abubakar Kumo, emphasized that the policy book is more than a document—it is a functional roadmap.

“This is not a ceremonial activity, but a strong commitment to ensuring that the rights of everyone are protected,” Dr. Kumo remarked. She confirmed that the Centre would lead the implementation, monitoring, and reporting mechanisms to ensure the policy translates into real-world safety for both staff and students.

The Sexual Harassment Policy Book now serves as the official university guide on prevention, reporting channels, and disciplinary actions, marking a new era of accountability at Gombe State University.
