House of Representatives Committee Expresses Concern Over Niger NYSC Camp Facilities

The House of Representatives Committee on Youth and Development has raised concerns about the deplorable state of facilities at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Paikoro, Niger state. During an oversight function visit to the camp, Hon. Martins Esin, the Chairman of the Committee, emphasized the need for immediate improvements to enhance the living conditions of corps members.

The Committee Chairman revealed that the National Assembly in Abuja is keen on the well-being of the NYSC, considering its role in fostering national unity and integration among Nigerian youths. He assured that the Committee has engaged with Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State, who committed to intervening and improving the camp facilities starting from January 2024.
"We have gone round the camp, inspected the male and female hostels and the clinic, there is need for improvement in the camp facilities," stated Hon. Esin. He reiterated the importance of making the environment conducive for corps members to deliver their best service to the nation.

Hon. Esin further disclosed that the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and the Committee's leadership are committed to overseeing NYSC activities and providing support for optimal performance.
While addressing the corps members, Hon. Esin advised them to be security conscious, acknowledging that they have become soft targets for criminals and enemies of the country.
The NYSC Coordinator in Niger State, Mrs. Abdulwahab Olayinka, reported that 1,495 corps members were posted to Niger State, with those dislodged from FCT, Abuja, being registered for the 2023 Batch C, Stream 1 orientation course in Niger state. She highlighted the corps members' high sense of discipline and security measures in place at the orientation camp.

Mrs. Olayinka outlined challenges faced by the scheme, including shortages of camp facilities, erosion control issues, and inadequate boreholes for water supply. However, she expressed optimism as the present administration led by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has shown concern and commitment to improving the facilities at the orientation camp.
This oversight function underscores the National Assembly's commitment to ensuring the well-being of NYSC members and promoting a conducive environment for their service.
