IPOB Sit-at-Home: Don't Jeopardize Students' Future with Exam Disruption- Parents Appeal

Parents of students sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination have voiced concerns over the clash between the WAEC Mathematics exam schedule and the Independent People Of Biafra (IPOB) sit-at-home order, urging the organization to reconsider its directive.

The IPOB group, last week, requested the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to reschedule the General Mathematics examination as it falls on their “Biafra Day” celebration. The group declared that there would be a sit-at-home protest across the entire South East, imposing restrictions on vehicular and pedestrian movement. They cautioned that they could not assure student safety on May 30 and held WAEC responsible for any incidents during the exam.

This news has triggered reactions from parents of students living in the South-East who have voiced their opposition to the IPOB directive. They emphasized that the WAEC examination is not a geopolitical examination but rather covers the whole of West Africa.

A trader in Umuahia, Okiyi, stated: “WAEC cannot cancel or shift the exam date because of the directive.”

Another parent, Kalu Okoro, expressed: “As much as nobody is against their sit-at-home, they should avoid actions that jeopardize our children’s future. If the IPOB succeeds in preventing our children from taking their exams, they should know that they would have succeeded in jeopardizing our children’s future. IPOB should proceed with caution to avoid past mistakes.”

Dr. Sunday Ajali, a parent, shared: “My daughter is at the Federal Government Girls College, Onitsha. She is sitting for the examination. Nothing should prevent it because it’s Mathematics and it’s not an ordinary subject. Without Mathematics, you can’t gain admission into any tertiary institution in the country. So, we request that IPOB should allow our children to sit for WASSCE.”

Mr. Uche Eze, another parent, said: “IPOB has no moral justification to order for the stop of a regional examination like WAEC. The call is ridiculous. Those behind the call should understand that they are trying to hinder the future of the young ones involved in the examination. WAEC is not meant for the South East or Nigeria alone, and the students will be at the receiving end of any disruptment. IPOB should sheath its sword and allow peace to reign. Let the academic future of the young Easterners not be jeopardised.”

Mr. Solomon Gwiyi, another parent, expressed: “The directive is misplaced and should be condemned in its entirety. It is anti-Igbo. It is inhuman. It is insensitive in all aspects of reasoning. An agitator who wants freedom and a better environment for the promotion of justice and fairness for his people, shouldn’t jeopardize their future. He further appealed to notable personalities to intervene and prevent the disruption of the exam.

Monday Eze, president of the Nigeria Parents’ Forum, commented: “This is a security issue. We don’t discuss security issues lightly. But our children’s lives are very important to us. Instead of risking our children’s lives, WAEC can reschedule the General Mathematics exam for another day, if the South East governors can’t ensure adequate security in the schools that day"

"IPOB should reconsider its threats and allow the WASSCE to proceed that day in Igboland for the sake of the children who are innocent future leaders”, he added.
