JSS 3 Student Hacks Man to Death in Cross River
Tragedy struck in the Bekwara Local Government Area of Cross River State when a Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) student, identified as Ogbeche, brutally hacked a 23-year-old man, Oshen, to death.
The incident occurred within the premises of Ugboro Secondary School, where both the student and the victim reportedly resided. According to eyewitness accounts, the fatal incident followed a heated altercation between Ogbeche and another student.
The deceased, Oshen, who was known in the community as a peacemaker, had reportedly stepped in to break up the fight in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.
Unfortunately, his intervention enraged Ogbeche, who is said to have retrieved a sharp object—believed to be a machete or similar weapon—and attacked Oshen with it. Sources close to the school allege that Ogbeche has a troubling history of aggression and violent behavior, with previous reports of him engaging in physical fights with both peers and adults in the area.
It is believed that this pattern of behavior had gone largely unchecked prior to the tragic incident. Oshen sustained severe injuries during the attack and was rushed to a nearby medical facility, but he was confirmed dead on arrival due to excessive blood loss and trauma.
Following the incident, local authorities were alerted, and Ogbeche was swiftly arrested. He has since been remanded at the Ogoja Correctional Centre, pending further investigation and possible prosecution.
The incident has sparked outrage and grief across the Ugboro community, with residents calling for stricter disciplinary measures in schools and better conflict resolution mechanisms among students.
Community leaders have also urged the government to prioritize mental health and behavioral assessments in educational institutions, especially for students with repeated disciplinary issues.
Police have launched a full investigation into the matter, and the school management is cooperating with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.
