LASU Scholar Warns Students Against Over-Reliance on Artificial Intelligence
A professor of Middle Eastern Studies at Lagos State University (LASU), Saheed Timehin, has cautioned students against over-relying on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their research and academics, emphasizing that it could stifle their creativity.
Timehin made this remark during a panel discussion at the retirement ceremony of Prof. Olujimi Kayode, held at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, LASU.
According to Timehin, while AI can be a useful tool, students must not compromise their intellectual abilities by depending too heavily on it. He stressed the importance of human intelligence and critical thinking in academic pursuits, urging students to conduct their research independently and avoid misusing AI.
The panel discussion, themed "The Imperative of Communication Ethics in the Digital Age," highlighted the significance of ethics in communication training and practice. Timehin emphasized that ethics is personal morality before public morality and determines what is displayed in public view.
- "Students must not destroy their creativity by over-relying on AI. Conduct your research yourself. Many times, the conclusion you get will be different from the AI submission."
- "AI must be used within its acceptable range. Do not mislead people; let there be full disclosure."
This warning comes as AI continues to transform the education sector, with many students leveraging AI tools to support their studies. However, concerns about dependence, ethical use and long-term risks to learning quality remain high.
