Professor Kabir Ahmed Abu-Bilal, a prominent academic at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has made headlines for his exceptional proficiency in welding alongside his distinguished career as a professor.

Despite holding the highest academic pedigree in the university circle, Professor Abu-Bilal operates a welding workshop in Zaria, demonstrating his passion for hands-on work and self-reliance. In an interview with Daily Trust, he shared insights into his journey, starting from being an arts student during secondary school to becoming a professor specializing in Mechatronics Engineering.

Facing challenges during his academic journey, Professor Abu-Bilal overcame mockery for choosing arts over science, excelling in science subjects, and eventually securing admission to ABU. Graduating with first-class honors, he transitioned to a lecturing role, later achieving the rank of professor.

Encountering restrictions on external jobs within the university, Professor Abu-Bilal established his independent welding workshop, overcoming initial challenges to achieve financial success. The income from his workshop exceeded his monthly salary as a professor, providing financial stability during academic strikes.

Beyond traditional welding applications, Professor Abu-Bilal has contributed to society by fabricating machines for public use. Notably, he is working on converting machines to use gas instead of petroleum products, aiming to reduce costs and address societal challenges.
