Meet Professor Aishatu Abdu-Ismail: Pioneer Director of BUK’s Centre for Gender Studies

Professor Aishatu Abdu-Ismail is one of Nigeria’s leading political scientists, gender policy experts, and advocates for women’s empowerment. With more than 30 years in teaching, research, and public service, she has made major contributions to political science, governance, and gender studies in Northern Nigeria.

She started at Shekara Boarding Primary School, then St. Louis Secondary School. She went on to earn a PhD in Political Science with research focused on multidisciplinary development, public policy, governance, and gender studies.

She built her career around governance, development, and gender equality. Her areas of specialization include State and Governance in Islam, Gender Studies, and Policy Formulation.

Professor Abdu-Ismail made history as the first Pioneer Director of the Centre for Gender Studies at Bayero University Kano, serving from 2016 to 2020. During that time she helped strengthen gender research, promote inclusive policies, and advance academic conversations on women’s rights and social development.

She has also worked as a consultant and researcher on many development initiatives.  

Currently, she serves as Chairperson of the High-Level Women Advocates, HILWA, in Kano State. In that role she leads campaigns to protect schoolgirls from drug abuse and gender-based violence, and to promote access to quality education for girls.

Through scholarship, leadership, and advocacy, Professor Aishatu Abdu-Ismail continues to mentor academics, policymakers, and young women. Her work has left a lasting impact at Bayero University Kano and across Northern Nigeria.

Her story reflects decades of commitment to making governance more inclusive and ensuring girls have the opportunity to learn in safe environments.
