NANS Condemns Suspension of SUG Election at Nasarawa State University

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the suspension of the Students' Union Government (SUG) election at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, which was held on September 4, 2024. In a statement released on Monday, NANS expressed strong disapproval of the university's decision, calling it a violation of students' rights and democratic principles.

NANS criticized the university management for causing unnecessary tension and frustration among students. They urged the Vice-Chancellor and university staff to reverse the suspension and allow the SUG Electoral Committee (IELCOM) to announce the results as required by the SUG Constitution, which mandates results to be declared within 24 hours after the election.

While NANS acknowledged some instances of electoral malpractice, they argued that suspension is not the appropriate response. Instead, they called on the SUG Electoral Committee to release the results using the soft copies of the election result sheets transmitted via WhatsApp, which are legally binding.

The association warned that any further delay in announcing the results could escalate tensions within the university. They appealed to stakeholders, including the University Council, parents, and alumni, to support the immediate reversal of the suspension and uphold democratic processes.

NANS urged students to remain calm and assured them that the leadership is actively working to resolve the issue. They also warned that failure to address the matter could lead to further action from NANS.

The statement was issued by Paul Edoh Gabriel, Assistant Secretary General of NANS National, and Daniel Friday Egga, Coordinator of NANS Zone C (North Central).
