NASG pledges support for FULafia medical students

The Nasarawa State Government has pledge to support medical students of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) to enable them successfully pursue their career.

The was disclosed by the Nasarawa State Commissioner of Health, Dr Gaza Gwamna, during the orientation programme for the newly admitted students of the College of Medicine of FULafia.

The commissioner who delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the Nasarawa State Government at the event, stated that the Engr. Abdullahi Sule-led administration was committed to revamping the state's health sector and improving the healthcare needs of the citizens, assuring that the government would support the training of medical and health practitioners in the University for the benefit of the state.

While congratulating the students on securing admission into the college of medicine, Gwamna encourage them to study hard and achieve their dreams.

The health commissioner who was also the guest lecturer at the orientation exercise, said that studying medicine “isn’t easy, and it often represents a big financial and time investment,” noting, however, that “the benefits are definitely worth it.”

Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, expressed his gratitude to the Nasarawa State Government for supporting the University. 

The vice-chancellor,  represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Partnerships, Prof. Samaila Usman Dakyes, thanked the provost and management of the college for organising the orientation exercise.

The vice-chancellor assured the students that the University Management was committed to providing conducive learning environment for them. 

In his remarks, the Provost of the FULafia Medical College, Prof. Ali Is'haq Shugaba, urged students to see their programme as a call to touch others lives.

Shugaba, who is also the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, of FULafia, advised the students take their studies seriously, saying that in the end, the students would be happier for the path they have chosen for themselves. 

Delivering the welcome address, the Chairman of the College Orientation Programme Committee, Prof. Ishaku Bako Ara, thanked the vice-chancellor and the provost for ensuring the success of the orientation programme.

He called on the students to listen attentively to what they would be taught in order to excel in their chosen fields of study.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Chief Medical Director of the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH), Lafia, Dr. Ikrama Hassan, FULafia Registrar, Nuradeen Abdu, represented by the Head of Legal Unit, Barr. Ignatius Ifiom, and the University Librarian, Prof. Abiodun Iyoro, congratulated the students, urging them to remain focused and committed to their studies.

The deans of the faculties of allied health sciences; Prof Surajudeen Junaid, clinical sciences; Prof. Ishaku Bako Ara, 

basic medical science; Dr Ahmed Mohamed Rabiu, and basic clinical sciences; Dr Mary Mathew, took their turn to educate the students on the peculiarities of the different faculties in the college of medicine. 

Presentations were also made at the orientation exercise by Prof. Mohamed Tanko Aliyu, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Chief Imam of FULafia Juma'at masjid, Dr Zira Joseph Dlama, Director of Open, Distance and E-learning and Head of Department of Radiography, Pastor Femi Ogungbemi, Mrs Ackley Omosigho, and Mr Simon Amos of the Student Affairs Division.

The topics discussed included: Spiritual perspective on coping with the rigors of academic and avoidance of social vices, E-learning facilities in the College of Medicine, Effective use of Medical Library resources and Examination Regulation, dress code, and rules governing antisocial behaviours.

The students of the Theatre and Media Arts Department entertained the audience with a beautiful dance performance. 

The event was graced by many dignitaries including the Personal Secretary to the Vice-chancellor, Bashir Ozomata and all heads of departments in the college and Dr Comfort Ukwela, the Head of Department, Theatre and Media Arts.
