National Open University of Nigeria Receives German Migration Experts for Partnership Talks

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) recently welcomed a team led by German migration expert Mr. Joachim Schemer to discuss potential academic collaboration on migration studies.
Schemer, who extended an invitation to NOUN for an upcoming seminar on migration studies, explained that the visit aimed to strengthen ties between NOUN and international migration research initiatives. This partnership would promote knowledge exchange, joint research, and program development.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, Deputy Vice-Chancellors Prof. Chiedu Mafiana (Academics) and Prof. Isaac Butswat (Administration) received the delegation. Both officials highlighted NOUN’s dedication to expanding its educational mission to tackle global issues like migration.
Schemer noted that NOUN’s Open and Distance Learning model offers unique potential to enhance understanding of migration across Nigeria. He added that the upcoming seminar will focus on migration trends, challenges, and policy responses, with participants expected from Turkey, India, Ghana, and other countries.
Prof. Mafiana emphasized that migration studies are crucial in today’s interconnected world, especially for Nigeria, which faces distinct migration challenges and opportunities. Prof. Butswat reiterated NOUN’s commitment to providing globally-relevant education that addresses modern societal challenges, including those surrounding migration and diaspora studies.
