NDLEA Proposes Mandatory Drug Tests for New University Students

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced plans to make drug tests mandatory for newly admitted university students across Nigeria. This was revealed by the NDLEA’s Kwara State Commandant, Fatima Abiola-Popoola, during a radio program in Ilorin over the weekend.

The initiative aims to reduce the growing issue of drug abuse among youths. Abiola-Popoola stated that the drug tests would act as a preventive measure and provide early intervention and counseling for those already using drugs.

She expressed concern over the increasing number of drug users in Nigeria, particularly among women, warning that this trend poses significant risks to families and society. Abiola-Popoola cited a 2018 survey that showed 14.3 million Nigerians were using drugs, with one in four users being female.
