NELFUND Update: BUK Management Issues Critical Guidance on Fee Payments and Verificatio
The Management of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has issued an important advisory to students regarding the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) application process and the payment of institutional fees for the upcoming 2025/2026 academic session.
As the university prepares for resumption, students are urged to monitor their NELFUND dashboards closely and adhere to the following directives to avoid financial complications.
Students who have successfully applied for the loan should note the two-stage verification process:
Pending Status: Initial status upon application. Verification is currently ongoing, and students are advised to remain patient.
Verified Status: Once verification is complete, a confirmation email will be sent. Only students with this status are guaranteed coverage for the session.
In a strong recommendation to protect student finances, the university advised:
Do Not Pay Fees: Students with a "Verified" status should not pay their school fees upon resumption, as NELFUND will settle these payments directly with the institution.
Refund Delays: Students who pay manually despite having a verified loan may face extreme delays in the refund process, which can reportedly take up to a year based on previous student experiences.
Existing beneficiaries of the scheme are reminded that the loan is not automatically recurring. To continue receiving support, returning students must re-apply for a new loan specifically for the next academic session.
This advisory follows the recent federal drive to increase NELFUND adoption across Northern universities to alleviate the financial burden on students amidst rising educational costs.
