Nigerian Medical Association Urges Swift Government Action to End Nationwide Strike Paralyzing LASUTH

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called upon the federal government to promptly address the concerns of workers in order to bring an end to the ongoing nationwide strike. Babajide Saheed, the chairman of NMA in Lagos, emphasized the need for urgent action during an interview with journalists on Monday in Lagos.

The strike, initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on June 3, is rooted in disagreements over a new minimum wage and increases in electricity tariffs. Mr. Saheed expressed solidarity with the NLC/TUC, stressing the adverse impact of governmental policies on the populace, including medical practitioners.

He cited rising morbidity and mortality rates due to economic hardships and urged the government to engage in meaningful negotiations with labor leaders to establish a livable wage reflective of the current economic climate.
