Nigerian scholarship students face risk of eviction due to overdue rent. Nigerian BEA students studying abroad on scholarships have lamented the non-payment of their stipends for the past 11 months by the Federal Government.

The students in Russia, under the sponsorship of the Nigerian Union Bilateral Education Agreement Scholars, stated in a video which has circulated on social media that the situation has left them in financial distress and has started affecting their academic performances. In the video, students were seen in a peaceful protest, beckoning on the Government to reimburse them. They explained that they have not received their grants in 9 months.

The Student Representative of the Federal Scholarship Board in Russia disclosed that despite efforts to reach the government, their plight still remains the same, stating that they got promises of “soon-soon”.

The students highlighted that they have been struggling with rent, explaining that they face the risk of eviction. In another video, Anka, an estate agent, is seen pleading with the Nigerian government to come to the aid of the students. “It’s been a while since they paid their rent. Anytime I meet them, they tell me this month or next month. Up till now, I have received nothing”, she added.
