Corps members have questioned both the empowerment scheme itself and the criteria used for selecting beneficiaries. They expressed dissatisfaction with the chosen 5,000 recipients, stating that this number is insufficient considering the vast number of Corps members nationwide.

Nigerians and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have raised concerns about the selection criteria for the 10 million NGN promised to Corps members upon completing their mandatory one-year service.

This follows recent news where the Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Ibrahim, announced the intention of President Bola Tinubu’s government to empower at least 5,000 National Youth Corps Service (NYSC) members with the sum of N10 million each as an initiative to support entrepreneurial endeavors upon completion of their mandatory one-year service. She disclosed this while speaking at a meeting with the NYSC management and leaders of Corps Producing Institutions (CPI) in Abuja.

Corps members have questioned both the empowerment scheme itself and the criteria used for selecting beneficiaries. They expressed dissatisfaction with the chosen 5,000 recipients, stating that this number is insufficient considering the vast number of Corps members nationwide. "What are the criteria for selecting these 5,000 NYSC members? I hope it's not merely based on connections to officials in power," one individual remarked.

Another raised concerns about the monitoring of fund execution, qualification criteria, recovery methods, and the potential favoritism towards the children of politicians. “How will you monitor the execution of the money, what criteria will be used to ascertain who qualifies and who does not, What will be the recovery method. What protocol will be set in place to ensure the money is not just given to the favoured children of politicians”, another expressed.

These inquiries reflect the corps members’ desire for a transparent and equitable selection process for the government’s financial empowerment scheme. They expressly stated their desire for a transparent system to the empowement scheme.
