Northwest University Kano Commissions Safe Keeping Centre to Curb Examination Malpractice
The Vice-Chancellor of Northwest University Kano, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, on Thursday, 19th February 2026, led a high-powered entourage to the Faculty of Education for the official commissioning of the “Safe Guard Initiative,” a secured facility established to safeguard students’ personal belongings during examination periods.
The newly commissioned Safe Keeping Centre, an initiative of the Alumni Association of Northwest University Kano under the leadership of its President, Abba Salo, is designed to provide a secure space where students can safely deposit their phones, bags, laptops, and other valuables before entering examination halls. The project is aimed at preventing theft and discouraging examination malpractice, thereby promoting discipline, integrity, and a more conducive academic environment within the University.
The initiative was brought to fruition under the guidance of the former Director of Advancement and Linkages of the University, Professor Rukayya Muhammad Hamisu. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Professor Rukayya explained that the University’s policy prohibiting the entry of phones and bags into examination halls inspired the idea of establishing a secure facility for students’ belongings. She further revealed that the Alumni Association plans to replicate similar Safe Keeping Centres in other strategic locations across the University, including the City Campus.
Also speaking at the event, the incoming Director, Professor Abdulmunin, commended the Alumni for their foresight and commitment to reducing examination malpractice through innovative and practical interventions. He noted that the initiative would significantly enhance the credibility of the University’s examination process.
In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, lauded the Alumni Association for what she described as a timely and impactful project despite being a relatively young association. She expressed concern over the rising cases of examination malpractice, particularly those linked to the use of mobile phones during examinations, stressing that the Safe Guard Initiative would go a long way in curtailing such practices.
She further noted that the facility would enable students to enter examination halls with peace of mind, knowing that their belongings are secure. While commending the Alumni for the job well done, the Vice-Chancellor also advised them to ensure careful and professional handling of the facility to sustain its effectiveness.
Professor Bayero emphasized that the initiative aligns with the University’s commitment to upholding academic integrity and promoting a disciplined examination culture across all faculties.
Earlier in his address, the President of the Alumni Association, Abba Salo, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and the University management for their continuous support to the Alumni body. He assured the University leadership that the initiative would be expanded to various parts of the University to ensure hitch-free examinations in all semesters.
The commissioning of the Safe Keeping Centre marks another milestone in the collaborative efforts between the University management and its Alumni Association towards strengthening institutional development, improving examination conduct, and enhancing the overall welfare of students at Northwest University Kano.
