Ondo Commissioner Advocates for Strategic Development at FUTA Lecture

Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), the Ondo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Razaq Obe, outlined a transformative vision for Nigeria’s economic growth through the strategic development of its energy and mineral resources. Speaking on September 13, 2024, during the 11th Annual Lecture of the School of Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEMS), Obe emphasized the need for robust transportation networks and energy infrastructure to bolster the nation’s economy.

Titled “Harnessing Energy and Mineral Resources for Sustained Economic Growth and Inclusive Development in Nigeria,” the lecture highlighted actionable strategies that governments at all levels can adopt to optimize the potential of the country’s natural resources. Engr. Obe argued that by prioritizing the development of the solid minerals sector and renewable energy sources, Nigeria can diversify its economy, thereby reducing its reliance on crude oil and unprocessed minerals.

“Mining valuable minerals like gold, lithium, and rare earth elements can create new revenue streams,” he stated, adding that a focused investment in refining petrochemicals and mineral processing industries would not only stimulate local industries but also generate jobs and decrease import dependence. “We must shift our approach; instead of exporting raw resources, we should refine and process them to maximize value.”

The Commissioner underscored that good governance and transparency are paramount in managing Nigeria's energy and mineral resources effectively. He called for the strengthening of institutions, enforcement of regulations, and promotion of community participation in decision-making processes as crucial elements for achieving inclusive development. “The government must urgently invest in critical infrastructure and prioritize policy reforms to create a conducive environment for investment and growth in these sectors,” he urged.
