Police Inspector Detained After Son Fatally Stabs Neighbor- Student at Madonna University

A palpable sense of tension has descended upon the Officers’ Barracks of the Warri Area Command of the Nigeria Police in Delta State, following a tragic incident in which a student, identified as Destiny Ogbantu, allegedly stabbed a fellow resident to death during a heated dispute.

According to reports obtained by PUNCH Metro, Destiny Ogbantu, a student at Madonna University and the son of a serving Inspector residing in the barracks, lost control of his emotions during a dispute and fatally stabbed his neighbor, Onyebuchi Emeka, within the vicinity of Block D, Warri Barracks apartments. 

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene in which, after a heated argument, Destiny rushed to his father's upstairs apartment to procure a knife and dagger. He then pursued Onyebuchi across several blocks within the barracks until Onyebuchi fell into a gutter. Destiny allegedly inflicted multiple stab wounds on Onyebuchi's back and chest, a horrifying spectacle witnessed by several residents, including the suspect's mother and siblings.

Tragically, despite being rushed to a nearby private hospital by family members, Onyebuchi succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission due to severe blood loss.

In the aftermath of the incident, the mother of the alleged perpetrator hastily departed the barracks with all her children, including Destiny, whose whereabouts remain unknown at the time of this report. Inspector Ogbantu, the father of the suspect, was subsequently arrested in connection with his son's actions and is currently in police custody.

Meanwhile, the Delta State chapter of the Nigerian Civil Rights Council has intervened in the matter, calling on the Nigeria Police Force not to ignore the gravity of the situation. Comrade Ojumude Bishop, a unit Coordinator of the organization, led a protest alongside fellow members, demanding justice for the deceased. They also called for Inspector Ogbantu to cooperate with the law enforcement authorities and not attempt to manipulate the facts surrounding the case.

As of the time of this report, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Command, Bright Edafe, had not responded to requests for comments on the incident. The community and authorities are left grappling with the tragic loss of life and the challenging legal ramifications that lie ahead.
