The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has announced the appointment of Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi as the new acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution. This appointment follows the removal of the former acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joe Ikechebelu, during a meeting held at the Council Chambers on Saturday.

The news was disclosed in a letter by the pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Ambassador Gregory Mbadiwe, and made available to journalists in Awka. According to Mbadiwe, Arinze-Umobi’s appointment is for a period of six months, in line with the provisions of Section 4 of the First Schedule, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004, as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act 2007.

Mbadiwe emphasized that the appointment, effective from Monday, July 22, 2024, is for a duration not exceeding six months. He noted, “The terms and conditions of your appointment are as approved by the Federal Government for all Federal Universities.” He also stated that a copy of the appointment letter has been forwarded to the Honourable Minister of Education for the information of the Visitor to the University.

In his letter to Arinze-Umobi, Mbadiwe extended warm congratulations and called for full support from all stakeholders as she takes on this critical role. He added, “Together, we will write the next chapter in the illustrious history of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.”

The letter addressed to Prof. Arinze-Umobi read: “Dear Professor Umobi, Appointment as Acting Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University. I am pleased to inform you that in accordance with the provisions of Section 4 of the First Schedule, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004 as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act 2007, the Governing Council has approved your appointment as Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka on the recommendation of the University Senate.

Meanwhile, it was observed that before the new appointment was effected, there was a notable presence of security personnel deployed on campus, ensuring a smooth transition during this significant change in leadership.
