Prof. Hadiza Galadanci: How ACEPHAP Research Is Transforming Maternal Healthcare Globally

The Director of the Africa Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP), Professor Hadiza Shehu Galadanci, has highlighted the Centre’s significant contributions to maternal healthcare, noting that its research and policy interventions are generating measurable impact at the state, national and global levels.

In her presentation, Prof. Galadanci explained that investments from the Gates Foundation have supported ACEPHAP’s research and interventions, contributing to major advances in the prevention and management of maternal complications.

She disclosed that ACEPHAP’s research contributed to the World Health Organization’s adoption of the EMOTIVE strategy as a global policy for the prevention and management of postpartum haemorrhage.

At the state level, the Centre has successfully engaged governments to include Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) commodities in their annual budgets. ACEPHAP also advocated for the inclusion of the WHO-recommended postpartum haemorrhage care bundle in the Annual Operational Plans of Kano, Plateau and Nasarawa States.

According to Prof. Galadanci, these interventions have contributed to a 57% reduction in severe postpartum haemorrhage and a 50% decline in postpartum haemorrhage fatalities, demonstrating the tangible impact of research translated into policy and practice.

She further noted that ACEPHAP has positioned Bayero University Kano (BUK) within the globally recognised Triple Helix Model, bringing together research institutions, government and industry to address pressing public health challenges.
