Reps Initiate Probe into JAMB Remittance Discrepancies

The House of Representatives has taken steps to investigate discrepancies in the remittances of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to the Federal Government's coffers. Following a lack of reconciliation between JAMB's financial records and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, the House Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies is establishing a committee to delve into the matter.

JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, reported before the committee, detailing the board's remittances starting from 2017. Oloyede highlighted that JAMB, under his leadership, remitted substantial amounts in 2017-2022. However, a discrepancy of N11 million arose during Mrs. Lucy Anom's submission from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation. In response, Committee Chairman Afoji Obuku called for a sub-committee to investigate the alleged differences and provide a report to the Committee on Basic Education.

Meanwhile, JAMB expressed opposition to the Federal Government's automated deduction of funds from registration fees for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Oloyede emphasized that this practice significantly reduces JAMB's revenue contribution to the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF). The examination fee reduction in 2019, coupled with the automated deduction, has led to a noticeable reduction in revenue remittances.
