Retired Major General Ola Orisamolade has achieved a remarkable academic milestone by earning a PhD in Mathematics at the age of 72 from the University of Ilorin.
His lifelong passion for mathematics, which began in primary school, drove him to pursue higher education.
Orisamolade studied Mathematics at the University of Lagos and later joined the Nigerian Army in 1975. After retiring as a General in 2010, he pursued a Master's degree in Mathematics, completing it in 2017. He then enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Ilorin, successfully defending his thesis.
Orisamolade's achievement is a testament to his discipline and perseverance. Despite facing personal challenges, including the loss of his wife, he remained focused and completed his studies. His thesis supervisor, Professor Kamilu Rauf, praised his dedication, saying, "Dr. Orisamolade's story is a powerful reminder that age should never be a barrier to education."
The University of Ilorin's Dean of the Postgraduate School, Professor Bamidele Owoyele, commended Orisamolade's achievement, highlighting the university's commitment to inclusive academic excellence. The university has produced over 15,000 PhD graduates in the past 15 years.
