Rhema University, Aba, Abia State, has received dual accreditation approvals from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN), and the National Universities Commission (NUC), enabling it to graduate students in Medicine and Surgery as well as Radiography.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ogbonnaya Onwudike, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the development at the university campus.
He described the accreditation as a major institutional milestone, confirming that the university has now secured full approval to graduate its first set of medical students.
“It is our joy to announce that we have received full accreditation to graduate our first set of students in Medicine and Surgery. We have received full accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the National Universities Commission,” he said.
Prof. Onwudike also confirmed that the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria granted approval following a verification visit on March 6, 2026, adding that the NUC had earlier cleared the programme for progression.
He noted that regulatory approvals are critical in ensuring professional certification of graduates, especially in clinical and technical fields such as radiography.
According to him, a formal letter dated March 17, signed by the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Prof. Fatima Kyari, conveyed provisional approval for final accreditation of the medical programme.

The letter stated that the institution is now permitted to conduct its 5th MBBS professional examination, paving the way for the graduation of its pioneer medical students.
Prof. Onwudike further announced that the MBBS final examinations will commence on July 13, after which the university will produce its first set of medical doctors. He added that MDCN officials will be present to monitor the examinations.
He also disclosed that Rhema University currently holds full accreditation in several academic programmes, including Nursing Science, Banking and Finance, Mass Communication, Economics, Marketing, and Political Science, among others. He added that accreditation for Medical Laboratory Science is expected soon following an upcoming verification exercise.
On funding for higher education, the Vice-Chancellor called on the Federal Government to amend the law establishing the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to allow private universities benefit from its interventions.
“The Federal Government should as a matter of urgency amend the law establishing TETFund to enable it extend its interventions to privately owned universities because we train people from the same economy,” he stated.
The development positions Rhema University as one of the emerging private institutions with growing capacity in health and allied sciences training in Nigeria.
