Sen Natasha Akpoti Urged to Advance Bill for FCE Okene Conversion to Federal University

Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central at the National Assembly, has been called upon to advance an abandoned bill aimed at converting the Federal College of Education, Okene into a Federal University of Education. This bill was initially pursued by her predecessor, Senator Yakubu Oseni, who brought it to the second reading before the conclusion of his tenure.

In a recent statement, the senator was reminded that governance is a continuum and that her role involves continuing the efforts of her predecessor. The need for effective representation at all levels of government is emphasized by the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates continuous advocacy for the constituents of Kogi Central.

Historically, the Federal College of Education, Okene, was established in 1974 to provide high-quality teacher training. Initially known as the Federal Advanced Teachers College, it was renamed in 1985 and currently comprises eight schools—equivalent to faculties in universities—and over forty departments.

Proponents of the upgrade argue that the college has the necessary infrastructure and manpower to achieve university status. The proposed conversion is seen as a significant step toward creating more employment opportunities for the region’s unemployed graduates and expanding educational offerings.
