Senate Moves to Establish Federal University of Agriculture in Osun

On October 2, 2024, the Nigerian Senate passed a bill to establish a Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, during its first and second readings. Sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the bill received support from several senators, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.

Senate Moves to Establish Federal University of Agriculture in Osun

The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step toward establishing a Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State. On Wednesday, October 2, the Senate passed the bill for both first and second readings, titled “A Bill for an Act to establish the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State, and to make comprehensive provisions for its due management and administration and for related matters, 2024.” The bill was sponsored by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC – Ekiti Central).

Following Bamidele's presentation, Senator Olarere Oyewunmi seconded the bill, garnering support from other prominent senators, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senator Solomon Adeola. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, put the request to a voice vote, which resulted in the bill's approval.

The proposed university aims to enhance agricultural education and research in Nigeria. The bill has been referred to the Senate Committees on Agriculture, Tertiary Education, and TETFUND for further legislative work, with a report expected back to plenary in two weeks.
