The Vice-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, has hailed the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) as a major catalyst in advancing the growth and development of Nigerian universities.
Speaking on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at his office in Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, while addressing the NTA Port-Harcourt Zonal Network Centre team, Professor Onuchuku described TETFUND as a “great blessing” to tertiary institutions, highlighting its role in providing critical support and funding that have transformed the Nigerian higher education landscape.
He noted that Nigerian universities would struggle to reach their current level of progress without the intervention and financial backing of TETFUND. The Vice-Chancellor commended the Federal Government for establishing the fund and praised the Rivers State Government for its prompt salary payments to staff, urging all stakeholders to continue supporting government initiatives in funding education.
Professor Onuchuku further emphasized that universities in advanced nations thrive due to strong investment in education and called on Nigerians to collectively support the sector. He stated that enhanced funding would reduce overreliance on student charges, improve learning infrastructure, and position Nigerian universities as institutions that can compete globally.
He concluded by stressing the importance of giving back to society, noting that well-funded universities are key to producing skilled, innovative, and socially responsible graduates.
