Tinubu Appoints Bisi Akande as Pro-Chancellor of University of Ibadan

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Chief Bisi Akande, former Governor of Osun State and pioneer chairman of the All Progressives Congress, as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan (UI).

This announcement was part of a new list of chairmen and members of governing councils for federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria, released on Friday. The appointments, approved by President Tinubu, were conveyed in a statement by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Nnamdi Maurice Mbaeri.

Among the notable appointees, renowned lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Wole Olanipekun, will lead the University of Lagos (UNILAG), while former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yayale Ahmed, will head Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. Former Bauchi State Governor, Isa Yuguda, has been appointed to chair the governing council of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), and former Senator Joy Emordi will chair the council of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State.

The list includes five names for each of the 51 universities, 35 polytechnics, and 22 colleges of education. Professor Oyeweso will head the governing council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), with Edward Sarki, Joseph Abaagu, Wahaab Owokoniran, and Abubakar Kachaalla as members of the council. Other notable appointments include Adebayo Shittu, Muiz Banire, and Senator Florence Ita Giwa, who were appointed as chairpersons of the governing councils of David Umahi University of Medicine in Ebonyi State, Federal University of Transportation in Katsina State, and Federal Polytechnic in Ugep, Cross River State, respectively.

This new list follows a review prompted by concerns from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other stakeholders over alleged imbalances in the initial nominations.
