No Nigerian University Makes Top 1000 Global Universities Ranking for 2025

The latest release of the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings for 2025 has highlighted the absence of Nigerian universities in the top 1000 global universities list. 

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a renowned higher education analytics firm, publishes annual rankings evaluating institutions based on academic excellence, reputation, and global diversity. This year's rankings feature over 1,500 universities across 105 higher education systems.

The United States leads with 197 institutions featured, followed by the United Kingdom with 90 and mainland China with 71. For the 13th consecutive year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retains the top position, while Imperial College London has risen to second place. 

However, Nigeria's representation in the rankings is notably absent, with only two universities making the list between positions 1100-1200: the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos.

This absence underscores the ongoing challenges facing Nigerian higher education institutions in achieving global recognition and competitiveness. In previous years, Nigerian universities such as the University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, University of Lagos, and Ahmadu Bello University have been recognized among the best globally.

Despite these challenges, efforts are ongoing to enhance the quality of education and research in Nigerian universities to improve their international standing.
