TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, has distributed solar lamps to schoolchildren in host communities of Oil Mining License 58 (OML58) in Rivers State. The distribution aligns with the company’s ‘Light Up Naija’ initiative, aimed at supporting students preparing for key national examinations, including the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO), and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Officials from TotalEnergies visited several schools in Egi land, including Government Secondary School, Akabuka, and Community Secondary School, Oboburu, both located in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area. Hundreds of Senior Secondary 3 (SS3) students benefitted from the solar lamps, which are intended to help them study for their forthcoming examinations in areas with unstable power supply.
At Government Secondary School, Akabuka, Mr. Jacob Ologe, Manager of Capacity Development at TotalEnergies, explained that the distribution of the lamps is part of the company's ongoing commitment to education and youth development in its host communities.
Mr. Matthieu Bouyer, Managing Director of TotalEnergies, emphasized the company's dedication to providing clean, affordable, and accessible energy while promoting sustainable development in its host communities. Represented by General Manager, Godspower Nwachukwu, Bouyer highlighted that many of the solar lamps were donated by TotalEnergies staff from their personal resources. He noted that the initiative underscores the company’s focus on the welfare of children in rural and semi-urban areas, particularly those without reliable electricity.
"TotalEnergies is passionate about the 'Light Up Naija' initiative as it aligns with our sustainable development goals, especially in the areas of community care and support," Bouyer stated.
Oti Emmanuel, Senior Prefect of GSS Akabuka, expressed gratitude on behalf of the student beneficiaries, acknowledging the positive impact the solar lamps would have on their studies. Principal of GSS Akabuka, Mr. Uti Uche, also extended his appreciation to TotalEnergies for their continued support in Egi land, particularly in the education sector.
