As part of the proactive measures to tackle challenges of insecurity, the Management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto has convened a security meeting to deliberate and take appropriate steps in the wake of terror alert in the University.
The security meeting, which had in attendance the Dean of Students' Affairs, the Students' Union, Campus Journalists, the Chief Security Officer and his Deputy, was held at the Senate Chambers of the University, on Wednesday 16th November 2022.
Speaking during the meeting, the Chief Security Officer narrated that recently upon resumption, a thief entered into a room at FBI and stole all their phones. He expressed that the security of students personal properties such as phones, wallet, ID cards and everything that could be carried around is actually their responsibility. We know it is difficult, but find a way of protecting your personal items, he said.
Speaking on the security of students at private hostels, the Chief Security Officer, Rtd. Col. Abdullahi Gwandu revealed that a form was designed and provided for each student going to seek a house at the private hostels. Narrating ordeals, the CSO noted that there was an issue where a man abducted a girl and kept her for two weeks, which he was later identified as an expelled student. He expressed on the challenge of students refusing to fill the form and the landlords going after their money.
Students in the private hostels should know that it is in their own interest to fill the form and submit to the Dean of Students' Affairs as the Management is working day and night to ensure more hostels are built and more security are employed. The Chief Security Officer assured.
He added that Bakassi hostel has been fenced, and the University will look forward to deploying security there.
On Morocco and Insecurity, the Chief Security Officer called on students to be reminded that Morocco starts by 6:00PM and ends 10:00PM. He further urged students to be reminded of the oath they take during matriculation, as the University gives knowledge and also help students' parents in building their character.
Speaking, the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. Umar Aliyu added that when a student fails to abide to the school rules, then the school won't bother about such student when they fall victim of any unwanted incidence. Otherwise the university will go all length to handle it. We're not here to regiment your lives but to see that you're protected. He said.
Speaking on the hostels generator, the Dean of Students' Affairs expressed that it is no longer feasible for the Management to operate generators due to the high cost of diesel. The University is broke, hence if the situation improves, the services will be restored. He expressed bitterly.
The Chief Security Officer added that students should learn to manage their time when there is power supply.
Speaking on electrical cookers, Prof. Umar Aliyu added that issues of high cost of kerosene doesn't warrant for the use of electrical cookers. In his words, he said: "It is better for you to buy your charcoal and cook. The rule of not using electrical cookers is still in rule, and we'll have to start going round".
