UI and CPUT South Africa Explore Strategic Collaboration on Wood-Based Satellite Technology

The University of Ibadan and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), South Africa are currently exploring opportunities for strengthening academic collaborations and Institutional Partnerships.

This was made known when the Vice Chancellor received Dr. Ayodele Periola from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), South Africa on a courtesy visit.

Dr. Periola, a Research Scientist from the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and the Built environment, CPUT, is in the University of Ibadan to explore prospects for partnering with scholars in the Department of Wood Production and Products on the possibilities of using wood in satellite building.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Periola stated that the essence of his visit is to collaborate with the department in pushing forward an aspect of research, using wood to design satellite. He noted that the possibilities of using wood to design satellite is currently receiving attention globally, hence the need for Africa to come on board, given its wealth of trees and vegetation.

 He stated that the collaboration would involve studying wood species, strength and properties and how to use them in satellite building.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor during the visit, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Prof Juwon Arotiba, who received the Scientist affirmed that the University of Ibadan is ever ready to collaborate with other institutions, particularly on research that could impact society.

He noted that the conduct of translational, impactful research is very germane to the University, in line with its vision of gearing its academic activities towards meeting societal needs.  

He lauded Dr. Periola for the initiative, while also pledging the support of the management to the project team.

Also on the visit were stakeholders from the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources and particularly, from the Department of Wood Production and Products who are hosting the project.
