UI Management, Students Reach Breakthrough Agreement; Electricity, Health Services to Restore Immediately
The leadership of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union has announced a landmark agreement with the university management following a morning of mass protests and an emergency congress on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
The demonstration, which grounded academic activities across several faculties, was triggered by prolonged electricity outages and the shutdown of essential services linked to ongoing national industrial action by non-academic staff.
Following high-level negotiations between the Students’ Union leadership—led by President Temidayo S. Adeboye and General Secretary Joshua O. Shontan—and the Vice-Chancellor’s team, the university management committed to three immediate interventions:
In light of these "concrete commitments," the Students' Union has enjoined all students to resume their academic activities and return to lecture halls immediately.
The Union leadership emphasized that while they have reached this agreement, they will remain "vigilant" and continue negotiations with stakeholders to ensure every part of the agreement is honored and that normalcy is fully restored to the campus.
