UNIABUJA Hosts CESRTA Stakeholders Roundtable and Workshop on Sickle Cell Disease
CESRTA, in collaboration with PACTS, gathers stakeholders at the University of Abuja to discuss strategies for combating sickle cell disease in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Centre of Excellence for Sickle Cell Disease Research and Training (CESRTA), in collaboration with Patients-Centered Sickle Cell Disease Management in Sub-Saharan Africa (PACTS), recently hosted a Stakeholders Roundtable and Workshop at the University of Abuja.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including religious and traditional rulers, school proprietors, primary education boards, and media professionals, to discuss the roles these groups can play in raising awareness and preventing sickle cell disease (SCD) in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Professor Obiageli Nnodu, Director of CESRTA, opened the workshop by stressing the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling the challenges of SCD, particularly in rural areas where awareness remains low. She urged for the widespread adoption of pre-marital screening and newborn screening to facilitate early detection and ensure that individuals living with the condition receive appropriate care.
The roundtable discussions aimed to establish practical strategies for addressing SCD through targeted interventions involving religious, community, and educational leaders.
This initiative underscores CESRTA’s commitment to reducing the prevalence of SCD in the region and enhancing quality of life through better awareness and prevention strategies.
The University of Abuja played a key role in hosting the event, providing a platform for the gathering of experts, health professionals, and community leaders to share knowledge and discuss actionable solutions to the growing issue of sickle cell disease.
This workshop marks a significant step in CESRTA’s ongoing efforts to engage diverse societal stakeholders in the fight against SCD and its devastating effects in Sub-Saharan Africa.
