The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has commended the Department of Fine and Applied Arts for giving their best to ensure that the department produces quality graduates, Myschoolnews report.

Prof Florence Obi made the commendation during an  Art exhibition organized by the Department of Fine and Applied Arts recently.

The University helmsman said she was impressed with the vigour, commitment and resources that Staff and Students of the Department have put into their work, saying the quality artwork produced by the students shows that the Department has churned out quality graduands.

Prof. Obi called on the department to try as much as possible to encourage the students to make their work more visible to attract corporate bodies for collaboration and partnership. She urged the students not to limit their work to their environment but to make conscious efforts to showcase their work also so that it can equally compete with other works of art at the international level.

The Vice-Chancellor  charged the department to redouble their efforts in ensuring that the next set of graduates from the Department surpass the performance of their colleagues, adding that, " this set will be like a role model to them."

She urged the students to ensure that they use their works to portray the diverse cultures of the people.

This came as Prof Obi assured the Department that her administration was ready to encourage, support and place them on the global stage.

Prof Obi stressed the need for students to project their works on strategic places and buildings within the University which can also attract scholarships, and contracts from government, private and corporate bodies.

The Head of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Prof. Victor Ecoma while speaking commended the giant strides, the department has recorded by graduating their first set of students against all odds.

Prof Ecoma said the exhibition was the first of its kind, stating that the essence of the exhibition was to showcase the Students' prowess in art.

He called on the University Management to support the Department with adequate funds to enable it to acquire the necessary tools for maximum productivity.

Prof. Ecoma said the Department would not relent in its efforts at producing graduating and value-driven graduates who will become employers of labour.

The exhibition featured different arts; textiles and fashion arts, sculpture arts, graphic arts, paintings, and ceramics works.

The high point of the event was the presentation of Nigeria's Coat of Arms made from beads by a student of the Department, Gloria Okon to the Vice Chancellor.
