The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has Charged Deans and Directors to be good mentors of younger scholars, Myschoolnews gathered.

Prof. Obi gave the charge at the University Senate Chambers while declaring open a One-day Retreat organized by the Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE ) for Deans and Directors of the institution.

The University helmsman said the essence of the Retreat was to re-engineer the mindset of Deans and Directors geared towards ensuring that they have the right attitude to work, adding that, it is a sure way to show mentorship.

Hear her, "As a Dean or Director, you need to show leadership in every ramifications. We need to show the young ones what it is like in academia.

People today come into academics without knowing what they are coming to meet. Some come for pecuniary benefits. Others because they don't have their desired jobs.

We need to mentor them. We need to show them a better way of doing things;the academic excellence and the academic culture of the University, so they can inculcate such culture and make it a part of them."

She urged participants at the retreat to be attentive, describing the topics picked for the workshop as phenomenal.

In an earlier remark, the Director of, the Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence, Prof. Usang Bassey Usang said the workshop is one among many that have been conducted by th Centre.

The Director said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi's administration believes in building the capacity of Staff in order to enhance effectiveness and productivity.

This is even as he used the occasion to commend the Vice Chancellor for all the support in making the Retreat a success.

Papers on topical issues were delivered by two erudite Resource Scholars to wit; Prof. Joel Babatunde Babalola from the University of Ibadan Nigeria who spoke on, "Time and Resource Management", and "Leadership and Succession in Higher Institutions of Learning; the Way Forward".And Prof. Anna Asuquo from the Department of Microbiology, University of Calabar, whose paper was on "Coaching and Mentoring".
