The Bursary Division of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has released detailed guidelines for staff and stakeholders on how to generate their Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) online through the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) eTax portal.In a recent bulletin, the Bursary outlined a nine-step process aimed at simplifying tax filing and certificate generation. The process ensures users can efficiently access and print their TCC, a critical document for various official transactions.

Step-by-Step Procedure for Generating TCC Online

  1. Log on to eTax Portal: The process begins by accessing the portal at etax.lirs.net. Users must log in with their Taxpayer ID and password. First-time users without a Taxpayer ID can create one by selecting ‘Create New Taxpayer ID’ and providing the required details.

  2. Password Retrieval: If a user forgets their password, they can select ‘Forgot Password,’ after which an OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to their registered email to reset the password.

  3. Profile Completion: After logging in, users are advised to verify their profile information, including address, phone number, and email. If any details are incomplete, users can use the ‘Chat Box’ feature on the portal for assistance with profile updates.

  4. Tax Returns Verification: Users who have already filed their tax returns can skip to Step 9. Otherwise, they should click on ‘Returns’ and then ‘Employer Filed Returns’ to confirm that tax returns for 2021, 2022, and 2023 are displayed. If any year is missing, users are advised to contact the Staff Matters Unit of the Bursary for assistance.

  5. Filing of Returns: To file returns, users should click on ‘My Tax Returns’ and select ‘File Returns Here.’ Users must then enter their gross income for each year, starting with 2021, as displayed in Step 4.

  6. Submission of Tax Returns: After entering income details for 2021, users must provide their address, select ‘Tenant’ as the accommodation type, and fill in the remaining spaces as required. This process is repeated for 2022 and 2023.

  7. Approval Request: Once the returns are filed, users must request approval through the ‘Chat Box’ feature. The portal will provide a timeline for when to check back for approval.

  8. TCC Generation: After receiving approval, users can generate their TCC by clicking on the ‘TCC’ tab in the eTax portal. They should scroll down to the bottom right corner, click on the action arrow, and download their certificate.

  9. Download and Print: The final step is to download and print the TCC for future use.

The Bursary Division emphasized that following these steps diligently will ensure smooth and timely generation of the TCC, a document crucial for tax compliance and various institutional processes.
