UNILAG DLI Kicks Off Academic Session with Seminar on Mental Health and Self-Care

The event, focused on mental health and holistic self-care, attracted DLI staff and local vendors, including Iya Moria Catering Services.
Held for the second consecutive year, the seminar underscores DLI's commitment to fostering a healthier, more balanced work environment. The highlight of the event was an engaging keynote by Professor Ayodele Olurotimi Coker, a renowned psychiatrist from Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).
Speaking on the topic “Enhancing Work-Life Balance and Self-Care in Open Distance Learning Environment,” Professor Coker provided practical strategies to help staff navigate the demands of professional and personal life. He introduced actionable stress-relief techniques, including laughter therapy, regular physical exercise, and stress-management practices that require minimal financial investment. The interactive session saw staff actively participating, with many expressing their appreciation for the insights shared.
Professor Coker also addressed pressing concerns such as economic challenges and the migration of skilled professionals, offering tailored advice for building resilience in uncertain times. He emphasized that achieving work-life balance can lead to improved mental health, greater job satisfaction, and enriched personal relationships.
Complementing the seminar was a spirited workout session led by fitness instructor Miss Omolola Taiwo, which energized participants and fostered camaraderie. The University’s Medical Centre also provided complimentary health checks, reinforcing the Institute’s dedication to holistic staff welfare.
In her closing remarks, Professor Dauda reaffirmed DLI’s commitment to staff well-being, announcing plans to make health-centered seminars a cornerstone of each academic session.
