UNILAG Inaugurates Molecular Biology and Next Generation Sequencer Platform, Boosting Research Capabilities
UNILAG recently inaugurated its Molecular Biology and Next Generation Sequencer Platform, signaling a significant advancement in research capabilities.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has taken a significant leap forward in scientific research with the inauguration of its Molecular Biology and Next Generation Sequencer Platform. The ceremony, held on July 8, 2024, at the D. K. Olukoya Central Research & Reference Laboratories, marked a milestone in advancing molecular-level research capabilities within the institution.

During the inauguration, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola emphasized the critical role of advanced laboratories in fostering high-quality scientific research. She highlighted the platform’s importance in addressing global challenges such as antimicrobial resistance through cutting-edge sequencing technologies.
The newly established Molecular Biology Laboratory features state-of-the-art equipment including the Next Generation Sequencer (MiSeq), integrated with the global Illumina Sequencer. This setup enables researchers, from undergraduates to faculty members, to conduct genomic research and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) conveniently within UNILAG.
Prof. Wellington Oyibo, Director of the D. K. Olukoya Central Research & Reference Laboratories, underscored the transformative impact of the platform. Supported by Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and other partners like Illumina and ISN Medical, the facility is poised to revolutionize research in genome editing, DNA extraction, and beyond.

In conjunction with the inauguration, UNILAG will host a DNA extraction workshop and an open lab group visit. These initiatives aim to empower undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as scientists, by providing hands-on experience with the new laboratory capabilities. This educational outreach underscores UNILAG’s commitment to nurturing future leaders in molecular biology and related fields.
The event also highlighted collaborative efforts between UNILAG and its partners. Prof. Bola Oboh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research), acknowledged the contributions of TETFund and equipment suppliers in advancing the university’s research infrastructure.
Looking ahead, UNILAG anticipates that the Molecular Biology and Next Generation Sequencer Platform will facilitate interdisciplinary research across health, agriculture, and environmental sciences. The university aims to leverage these capabilities to contribute significantly to scientific discoveries and societal advancements.
