UNILAG Prof. Mary Odukoya Secures Prestigious Research Grant to Study Environmental Impacts of Artisanal Mining
Professor Mary Odukoya of the Department of Geosciences at the University of Lagos has been awarded a research grant by the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry (SKLEG) under the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Professor Mary Odukoya of the Department of Geosciences at the University of Lagos has been awarded a research grant by the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry (SKLEG) under the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The grant, awarded through the SKLEG Open Funding Programme (Grant No. SKLEG2024211), will support her collaborative research with Professor Li Ping of SKLEG.
Their project, titled “Assessing the Environmental Impact, Sources, and Human Health Risks of Heavy Metals from Artisanal Mining Operations in Nigerian Karst Landscapes,” aims to analyze the environmental and health consequences of heavy metal contamination in areas impacted by artisanal mining in Nigeria.
As part of this research initiative, Prof. Odukoya will deliver a special seminar at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, scheduled for November 7, 2024, at the Institute of Geochemistry. Her presentation, titled “Assessment of Contamination, Health Risk, and Bio-accessibility of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in the Soil of Artisanal Gold Mine and Processing Sites, Minna, North Central Nigeria,” will address key findings on the environmental and health risks associated with mining activities in Nigeria.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG extended her congratulations to Prof. Odukoya on this significant achievement, applauding her dedication to impactful research in environmental science. https://unilag.edu.ng/?p=44195
